The history of Sweden began with the Vikings in 700 AD. The Vikings’ traditions are still very well seen in the lifestyle of many Swedes. The period of Middle Ages in the history of Sweden was marked by an epidemic of plague. The “Black Death”, how it was called, took the lives of millions of people. In the 15th century the Christianity was introduced, the Swedes accepted new religion and Ostergotland became a specific center of Christianity in Sweden. In 1389 the treaty known as the Kalmar Union was signed, after it went into effect, a single government in northern Europe (Norway, Denmark and Sweden) was formed. All the same this document didn’t prevent these three nations from the war, which lasted for many years. The foundation for modern Sweden was laid in 1521 by King Gustav I, who was the first to make an effort to break down the unity. That’s why King Gustav I is considered to be the “Father of the Nation”.
In the 17th century Sweden became one of the major powers of Europe. The economy of the country prospered greatly, the standards of living were rather high. All these positive changes took place despite the fact that Sweden kept on fighting with some neighboring countries. The treaty of piece was finally reached in 1814, since that time the country tries not to war. The next centuries in the history of Sweden were characterized by an evident growth of the economy. Since the end of World War I the modern parliamentary democracy was established in the country. Nowadays Sweden hosts the Court of European Justice, can boast having good relations with other European countries. Thanks to the constantly developing sphere of tourism, Sweden offers the visitors the best conditions for the rest and excursions.
